Uluwatu is best enjoyed without trying to fit too much into a single day. There are beaches with world class surf tucked beneath limestone cliffs, winding coastal roads, and sunsets that make a good reason to stay a little longer. The trick is to leave enough time between plans to enjoy them.
If you are spending a day around Bingin Uluwatu, here is how to make the most of it, from a quiet morning by the sea to an evening over good food.
Start the Morning at Bingin Beach
Begin early, before the sun gets too high. Bingin Beach is known for its secluded beach vibe, rocky shoreline and surf breaks. In the morning, you can watch surfers paddle out, walk along the shore at low tide or find a quiet spot to take in the ocean.
The beach changes with the tide, so check conditions before heading down. Bring water, wear comfortable footwear and leave enough energy for the climb back up.
Take Your Time Over Breakfast
After a morning outdoors, breakfast is best enjoyed without watching the clock.
At Gooseberry, our French breakfast, Le Matin, brings together freshly baked brioche, baguettes and pâtisserie from L’Atelier, our in-house pâtisserie, alongside breakfast favourites. Settle into the garden, order a coffee and give yourself time to enjoy the morning.
It is a good moment to pause before the heat of the day sets in.
Spend the Afternoon by the Water
If you feel like exploring further, Thomas Beach is a good option for a longer stretch of sand and a quieter beach day. It sits below the cliffs and is reached by a path and stairs, so comfortable footwear is worth bringing.
For a more dramatic landscape, head to Suluban Beach, where limestone formations and narrow passages open towards the ocean. It is particularly interesting for watching experienced surfers, although the rocky access and powerful waves make it less suited to swimming.
Whichever you choose, check the tide and ocean conditions before setting out. Uluwatu’s beaches are beautiful, but the sea can be unpredictable. Uluwatu beach itself is accessible at low tide only and you can walk through the legendary Uluwatu cave entrance to reach a stretch of unspoilt sand.
Alternatively, keep the afternoon simple. Find some shade, read a few pages of a book or return to your accommodation for a rest. There is no need to turn every hour into an activity.
A Little Something in the Afternoon
For those who prefer to spend the afternoon around a table, Gooseberry’s Le Goûter offers a French take on afternoon tea in Bali. Served on a three-tiered stand, it includes savoury bites and handcrafted pâtisserie from L’Atelier, accompanied by tea or coffee.
Available from Friday to Sunday, between 2 pm and 4:30 pm, by reservation, it is an opportunity to slow down before the evening begins.
Watch the Sun Set Over the Cliffs
As the day cools, make your way towards Karang Boma Cliff for wide views across the Indian Ocean. The open clifftop landscape is particularly striking in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the coastline begins to change colour.
Stay a little while, but keep a safe distance from the cliff edge, as some areas are unfenced.
Finish the Day at Gooseberry
After a day spent exploring the coast, there is something satisfying about settling in for dinner.
At Gooseberry Uluwatu, French cooking is built around traditional techniques, carefully selected ingredients and the pleasure of a meal enjoyed at a comfortable pace. Begin with freshly baked bread from L’Atelier and an amuse-bouche from the Chef, then explore the menu of French classics, including slow-braised Bœuf Bourguignon, Cassoulet de Canard Confit and prime beef aged in-house.
Finish with a classic French dessert and take your time at the table.
A good day in Uluwatu does not need a packed itinerary. A beach in the morning, an unhurried afternoon and a thoughtful dinner are often enough. Leave a little room for the unexpected, and let the day unfold.
